The long thoracic nerve supplies the fan-shaped serratus anterior muscle. On contraction, the serratus anterior muscle elicits anterolateral movement of the scapula along the ribs allowing us to raise our arms above 90 degrees! So that we can lift our arms up to… heaven.
The long thoracic nerve originates from C5,C6 and C7 nerve roots of the brachial plexus and we know this nerve supplies the ‘arm raising’ serratus anterior muscle.. soo all we need to remember is… C5,6,7.. Raise your arms to heaven!
