This slender muscle is part of the superficial compartment of the posterior forearm. It arises from the lateral supracondylar ridge of the humerus, just here and intermuscular septum. It then extends distally, crossing over the wrist joint to insert onto the posterior base of the 2nd metacarpal bone.
As its name suggests, this muscle is an extensor! It extends the hand at the wrist and due to its radial positioning, also abducts the hand at the wrist. Facilitating these movements is the radial nerve, which supplies its motor innervation!
